What is Estradiol?

Estradiol is the most potent and abundant form of estrogen in the body. It regulates the menstrual cycle, supports bone health, affects mood and cognition, and maintains reproductive tissue health in women. Men also produce smaller amounts for bone and brain function.

Why is it Tested?

Doctors test estradiol to evaluate menstrual irregularities, investigate fertility issues, assess menopause status, monitor hormone replacement therapy, and evaluate precocious or delayed puberty. In men, it may be tested for gynecomastia or osteoporosis.

Normal Ranges

Reference ranges vary significantly by gender and menstrual phase:

  • Premenopausal women: 30–400 pg/mL (varies with cycle)
  • Postmenopausal women: <30 pg/mL
  • Men: 10–40 pg/mL

In women, levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle, peaking just before ovulation.

What do Abnormal Results Mean?

Abnormal results are not a diagnosis. Always discuss your results with a qualified healthcare provider before making any medical decisions.

Low Estradiol

Reduced levels may indicate:

  • Menopause or perimenopause
  • Ovarian failure or dysfunction
  • Hypothalamic dysfunction
  • Excessive exercise or low body weight
  • Certain medications

High Estradiol

Elevated levels suggest:

  • Ovarian tumors
  • Liver disease
  • Obesity
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Certain medications

How to Track Over Time

Estradiol levels naturally fluctuate in premenopausal women, so timing of testing matters. Tracking patterns helps assess reproductive health, monitor menopause transition, and evaluate hormone therapy effectiveness. In men, consistent levels help assess hormonal balance.
