Basophils (Absolute)

Track absolute Basophils count to monitor allergic responses and immune function. Learn about white blood cell health patterns.

BASO · 10³/µL · aka BASOPHILS, BASOPHIL, BASOPHIL COUNT, ABSOLUTE BASOPHIL COUNT, BASO ABS, BASOPHILS ABSOLUTE, BASO #, BASOPHILS #, BASOFILOS

What is Basophils (Absolute)?

Basophils (absolute) measures the actual number of basophils per microliter of blood, rather than their percentage among white blood cells. Basophils are the rarest white blood cells, involved primarily in allergic reactions and inflammatory responses. They release histamine and other mediators when activated.

Why is it Tested?

Doctors order absolute basophil counts to evaluate immune system function and investigate allergic disorders, parasitic infections, or certain blood cancers. The absolute count provides more precise information than percentages when total white cell counts are abnormal, making it particularly valuable for monitoring specific conditions.

Normal Ranges

Reference ranges vary by lab, but general adult guidelines:

  • Adults: 0–0.2 × 10³/µL

Normal absolute basophil counts are very low, reflecting their role as specialized immune cells that respond to specific triggers rather than routine infections.

What do Abnormal Results Mean?

Abnormal results are not a diagnosis. Always discuss your results with a qualified healthcare provider before making any medical decisions.

Low Basophils

Very low or undetectable basophil counts are often normal, as these cells are naturally rare. Persistently low counts may occur with:

  • Acute stress or severe infections
  • Corticosteroid medications
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Severe allergic reactions (cells may be consumed)

High Basophils

Elevated absolute basophil counts (basophilia) may indicate:

  • Chronic allergic conditions
  • Parasitic infections
  • Chronic inflammatory diseases
  • Myeloproliferative disorders (chronic myeloid leukemia)
  • Hypothyroidism

How to Track Over Time

Tracking absolute basophil counts helps distinguish between true basophilia and relative changes due to shifts in other white cell populations. Consistent elevation warrants investigation for underlying allergic, inflammatory, or hematologic conditions, while trending patterns can guide treatment decisions.
